What a gift -- for me -- to find this new collection of John Carter arrangements. This is a departure from his previous collections in that it is a collection of theme and variations based on traditional American hymn tunes from Southern Harmony (1835), Sacred Harp (1844) and other tunes of that...

time. All of the hallmarks of John Carter arrangements are here: rich, unexpected harmonizations, syncopated rhythms, unusual rhythms, even a rag (Holy Manna!) -- all while remaining true and respectful to the spirit of the original. John Carter arrangements always make me look good, and please the congregation. I expect to use these sets as a prelude (theme plus a variation) and postlude (two more variations). I hardly know where to start, these are all so satisfying, but I think I will start with Holy Manna.
