Beautiful, sensitive, and introspective, Sicilienne was created as part of incidental music for a production that was never made. Later, it was published in an edition for violoncello and piano. Finally, Faure orchestrated it as incidental music for the play Pelleas et Melisande. This orchestral version has been adapted for string orchestra with striking results.
