This is a great introduction to the mysterious sounds of Satie and provides the often neglected Seventh Gnossienne. The text and notation is clear and the preface offers a solid insight into the composer's style and life at the time of the writings. Even with many of the pieces...

lacking barlines, as they were written, the music is clearly communicated for the most part. There are quite a few notation errors however. For instance, in Gnossienne 5, there is an 8va for a part that should be played as written (loco) in measure 14. Also, in measure 18, the passage moving up to the 7-tuplet is written as F#, D and F#, when it should be F#, B and D as it has been throughout the rest of the piece. Gnossienne 7 is filled with the wrong dynamics (everything is one dynamic higher than it should be), in measure 59 the RH notes are written an octave higher than they should be, and in measure 82, there is a tie on the second C to the ending, it should not be there.

I am an 'adult beginner' of 3 years and I have found the first three Gnossiennes a pleasure to work on. I find the mood of them mesmerizing and a wonderful departure from all the other classical pieces in my books. I am so glad to have all seven under...

one cover, to push me as improvement continues. I am now a HUGE Satie fan!

These are great pieces that reveal just how innovative Satie was. They're all very effective and not too difficult to play.
