For my Dear Wife

'Listen carefully to all folk songs; they are a treasure trove of the most beautiful melodies and offer you an insight into the character of the various nations ... never miss an opportunity to make music with others ... '

-- Robert Schumann

Folk song, indeed singing in general, is under threat. Our technological environment and all-inundating media are silencing the songs that once accompanied daily life. Songs of conspicuous wealth now live in the shadows: they are scarcely known anymore, seldom sung any longer.

But we should not forget the extraordinary efforts made to save this precious, unique heritage. The names of Goethe and Herder, Achim von Amim, Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Uhland, as well as the numerous folk-song arrangements by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Johannes Brahms, up to Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, remind us of that.

The songs chosen for this volume come from the collection of W. A. Zuccalmaglio (1803-1869).
