Schumann -- Carnaval, Op. 9

Schumann -- Carnaval, Op. 9 composed by Robert Schumann. Edited by Maurice Hinson. For Piano. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Edition. Masterwork; Romantic. Advanced. Book. 60 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.4576).

ISBN 073908190X. Masterwork; Romantic.

Carnaval is characteristic of Schumann's highly individual youthful romanticism and requires musical maturity for performance. Written for advanced pianists, it is a series of glimpses enveloped in the atmosphere of a masked ball with titles such as "Arlequin," "Papillons," "Sphinxes," "Coquette" and so on. Most of the 23 pieces are based on the notes A-S-C-H, arranged in a succession of melodic and rhythm patterns ("s" is German for E-flat, "h" is German for B-natural). Asch was a Bohemian town where Schumann had a girlfriend. 60 pages.

    San Juan Capistrano, CA
    Difficulty Level:
  • August 08, 2008 The best (and worst!) of editions

In some ways, this edition is indispensible: the introductory material and the comments for each movement are full of valuable information (there's even a picture of Schumann's piano!), the musical text is clearly printed and well laid out on the page, and it's sturdy and relatively inexpensive...

. But the text itself is full of errors; almost every movement has some dire misprint. (I'm willing to guess that the problems arose from proof-reading, not the edition Hinson prepared for publication, but it doesn't really matter; you can't depend on the text.) The fingerings are not very good, either, though this is a very personal matter. I recommend that you buy this edition for its introductory material, but either use Clara Schumann's edition for performance or enter all the textural corrections from that edition into Hinson. A real disappointment from a man who has done so much for the piano repertoire.
