Brass quintet (2 trumpets, french horn, trombone and tuba) - Grade 4
From 'Sophisticated Ladies'. Composed by Duke Ellington (1899-1974). Arranged by Jeff Jarvis. Jazz. Score and set of parts. Duration 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Published by Kendor Music Inc (KN.19013).

Item Number: KN.19013

This time tested favorite by Duke Ellington from Sophisticated Ladies has been skillfully adapted for brass quintet by critically acclaimed writer Jeff Jarvis. Featuring many of the pleasing voicings and rhythmic twists of Jeff's jazz ensemble charts, this exciting arrangement of Satin Doll begins in a light samba style before evolving into a hard-swinging feel midway through the piece. Ranges and rhythms are accessible to grade 4 players, and adequate rests for each player are offered throughout. The light nature of the piece, plus its duration of 2:30 make it ideal for an encore selection.

  • May 14, 2011 Odd Samba Really Nice Swing!

The Samba top 2/3 of this piece is a little odd, and a little difficult to follow at times. However, once it goes into the swing section, the piece really comes together, and is a blast to play. I'm just not sure they marry together that well.

I didn't like this arrangement at all -- mainly because the first half of the tune is a samba, then it switches to swing. Why the samba treatment? Can't we just have a straight-ahead statement of the melody like any other jazz standard. The swing section was OK...

, but a litle stilted. I've def played better brass quintet jazz standards.

Not too hard. Not too easy. Recognizable tune.
