Ross Roy

Ross Roy composed by Jacob De Haan. For Concert Band (Score & Parts). De Haske Concert Band. Grade 4. De Haske Publications #0971085010. Published by De Haske Publications (HL.44002748).

Commissioned by the “St. Peters Wind Symphony” from Brisbane, Australia, the title refers to the late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded. The villa has remained the school symbol, and in this composition Jacob de Haan views “Ross Roy” as a metaphor for the years spent at school, where one's personality is formed. The main theme is developed through a series of variations, rich in stylistic contrasts and dramatic building points. It is no coincidence that the final segment is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the “overture” to the rest of one's life. Dur: 9:20.

I am a big listener of wind band music and I have just recently come across Jacob De Haan. The recording I have of "Ross Roy" is very distinct. It sounds kind of unreal. The brass are extremely powerful, however one has to strain to hear the winds. The recording...

is on his main website. The English Horn solo is the most emotional part in the work. It can either be done on Alto Sax or on English Horn. Although Jacob De Haan is certainly not a "bad" composer,I find his pieces to be on the shallow side. I like music that has a bit more substance and depth. Many of his works are very long and have historical backrounds, such as "Virginia", "Oregon", and "Utopia". I recommend "Ross Roy" to a group of younger musicians.
