"The rage over a lost penny, given vent in a Caprice," well reflects the humor of Beethoven and has been popular with young pianists for decades. The original theme is manipulated through many keys and variations in this extended "tour de force." All fingerings, pedal indications, metronome markings and parenthetical material are editorial unless otherwise indicated.

I purchased this edition because Alfred publications almost always feature very clean and readable typesetting, with attractive graphics. When learning a new piece, I find it valuable if the music is presented in a format that is easy to read. The quality of Alfred Masterworks publications are somewhat uneven in...

other respects, though. There is little analysis of the score, and no help with technical aspects. There is no attempt to give a picture in any depth of Beethoven's life situation during the time he wrote this work. Most important, however, is that a textual variant is introduced with no discussion at all. Measure 268 differs significantly from the text of the first edition. This should have been discussed. with it's shortcomings, this is still a good buy. Just don't expect anything more than a clean score.
