Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1410 - 1497) was the leading composer of the second generation of the Netherlandish school. Ockeghem is often considered the most important composer between Dufay and Josquin Des Prez. His secular works of have been somewhat neglected in our time, partly because until recently there was no complete edition. This is a pity, because the relatively small corpus of surviving pieces (about a quarter of the total by Ockeghems contemporary Antoine Busnois) is of remarkable quality. The present selection includes two pieces that were very widely-known in the late 15th century: the virelai "Ma bouche rit" and the rondeau "Dun aultre amer" (one of the most widely-arranged pieces of its time, after "De tous biens playne" and "fay pris amours"). Ockeghems songs, though small in number, are quite varied in their ap proach. Two of the pieces here have a good deal of imitation between discantus and tenor, as is often found, for example, in the late songs of Dufay, or many by Busnois. "Ma maistresse", on the other hand, is written in an older, more treble-dominated style, in which the tenor does not much imitate the discantus: it is remarkable for its long soaring phrases.
