The present duets are conceived entirely in the idiom of the French Rococo. This music was not intended for a large public but designed rather to be played for the pleasure of the performer or a quite small group of listeners. Although the pieces are entitled "Sonate" they appertain more to the Suite in their formal construction. Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, who was born in Perpignan, went to Paris when he was still quite young. He probably owed a pood deal of his melodic wealth to the folk music of his native Pyrenees and also his fondness for dance movements. For Boismortier the Paris of the years between 1720 and 1740 was just the right atmosphere that was only too receptive to rural music and such rustic instruments as the flute, oboe, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. Amiable and entertaining by nature, he was a welcome guest in Parisian society.
