  • April 01, 2009 Why the level 10 difficulty rating?!

I am baffled by the SMP difficulty rating of 10. This book is fantastic for almost all levels after perhaps a year or so of lessons. The exercises are very methodical and the first 169 of them only cover 5 notes. Amazing how simple, but how effective! To be honest...

, after the first 33, you do have to sustain at least 1 note while playing the others. But every exercise is from C - G and no black keys. Don't let the (very silly) difficulty rating scare you off from using this wonderful and inexpensive book!

  • December 31, 2007 Schmitt: Useful Exercises for Any Level Player

The Schmitt studies have helped me a great deal over the years. They are easy to read, unlike some exercises which can be unduly complicated because they take too much time to learn. I believe that any studies which are hard to sight read are that much less likely to...

be played religiously. Any pianist, regardless of level, will not be slowed down (and discouraged) by the complexities of Schmitt. The studies which involve held notes and double notes are particularly effective. These are great studies for building technique or for warming up. As with any physical exercise, it is good to repeat each study to the point of mild fatigue, just like doing sit-ups or chin ups. If you don't push yourself into that zone, you will not achieve the maximum benefit from these studies. They're tailor-made for this type of practicing.

The exercises can be divided into parts and practiced together. No need to learn them by numbers. And with this price it worth your money.
