The Prelude and Gavotte are taken from one of Corelli’s concertos for string orchestra, and Doris Gazda has arranged them marvelously for a younger group. A simple song, the Prelude encourages your students to play beautifully and sensitively within its smooth, legato tone. On the other hand, the Gavotte is lively and impish, giving your students a workout in contrasting styles. Not only is it impressive in contest and festival, but Prelude and Gavotte is a great way to introduce your group to the Baroque style.
Arcangelo Corelli (1653 –1713) was an Italian violinist and composer of Baroque music.Corelli grew up in the area of Ravenna, Italy but found success as a violinist and composer in Paris where he went at the age of nineteen. From Paris he travelled to Germany and composed in the service of the electoral prince of Bavaria. Finally he returned to Italywhere he lived and composed in Modena, Rome and Naples.Corelli brought changes to the technique of playing the violin. String players, upon hearing him perform, copied his technique of playing. One can trace back many generations of violin teachers and students to Corelli. Also, he developed the style of the trio sonata. Most of the composers who had the opportunity to hear his music studied it carefully to gain ideas into the best methods of writing for string ensembles.Musical society in Rome owed much to Corelli. He was received in the highest circles of the aristocracy and for a long time presided at the celebrate Monday concerts in the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni. Corelli is buried in the Pantheon at Rome. Corelli composed 48 trio sonatas, 12 violin and continuo sonatas, and 12 Concerti Grossi. The Prelude and Gavotte are taken from one of the concertos he wrote for string orchestra. The Prelude is a simple song and should be played with a beautiful legato tone. TheGavotte is a lively dance. Care should be taken to follow both the dynamics and the bowing articulations.
