    Simple, instructions with beautifully chosen musical examples to demonstrate the exercise. I recommend the book. Use of a mute makes the experience even better revealing the haunting melodies produced by correct shifting. A great foundation for working into the violin's marvellous palate of upper notes.

    This book works systematically through the shifts from 1st to third position, with each finger and string in turn, and then each combination of starting and arrival fingers. For each shift, after practising the shift itself, Mackay gives a short tune incorporating that shift several times. The tunes are a...

    delight - all different keys and moods, with varied bowings and dynamics. Enough character to please a child, enough subtilty for an adult.
