Designed as a comprehensive multimedia teaching set, this book, CD, and DVD present 42 solos, progressively graded in 6 levels from absolute beginners to more advanced, to suit players of all levels. It contains examples of eighteen different palos (rhythmic forms) of flamenco, with a wealth of melodic falsetas and rhythms. The music for all these is accurately written in notation and flamenco tab (cifra) in the book, and is also recorded on the companion CD. The DVD video contains over 57 minutes of solo music, and also includes introduction by Juan Martin and brief scenes of Andalucia today, which help to place this profoundly exciting and deeply felt music in the landscape of its origins. Juan Martin has succeeded here in showing how even music which is simple and very easy to start with can express the essential sound and emotion of flamenco, to build step by step the skills necessary for the performance of concert solos. Written in English and Spanish.

Very good material from intermediate to more advanced, esp. for those w/some experience. Seems to be based on traditional flamenco & J. Martin is a very earthy player. The DVD is also good w/inspirational scenes & great performances.

  • January 26, 2009 Other variations for Flamenco players

I don't recommend this book for absolute beginners, you need to start with Juan Martin's "El arte Flamenco de la guitarra" first. This book gives great variations to what you've already learnt from El arte flamenco de la guitarra, but doesn't explain much of the techniques...

used for flamenco. The pieces are not really graded, so if you get stuck with one of the pieces, move on to the next, but keep practicing the pieces you missed out.

  • January 17, 2009 A collection of listenable, graded solos

A very useful work for guitarists with some skills and knowledge of flamenco going in. Graded selections allow one to get a feel for compas without dealing with too much technique at the same time, yet the pieces are tuneful, and the CD makes good listening. Ideally, this would be...

used in conjunction with Martin's earlier method book, in which technique is more fully discussed, but the level of difficulty increases a bit too rapidly. I'm looking forward to the promised sequel, covering the last two grades.

  • April 09, 2008 Finally!

After buying several flamenco DVD's, I finallly got the right one. I don't play the guitar at all, but this video finally makes me a beginner. Thank you Juan Martin.
