  • July 07, 2008 Top notch music for a beginner

If you are struggling to find beautiful music to play as a beginner I highly recommend this music. I give it to my students as they are learning to play in fourth position. There are only a few notes to be played in fourth. Most of the music can be...

performed in first. These are the famous melodies from Puccini's operas and as such are not demanding technically (no fast notes) and yet they are still fun to play. The beginning student will feel a great sense of accomplishment to play something so beautiful. The tunes are immediately recognized and easily learned. I use some of these when I perform at weddings and preludes at local churches.

  • December 03, 2007 Your best chance to be Pavarotti

Well, maybe not exactly Pavarotti. But these arias are lush and melodious, all written in a good range for the intermediate 'cellist. The collection is complete with piano accompaniment, and it also has a CD that has complete performances as well as piano only, so you can play along. Most...

of the selections are easily recognized by anyone who is familiar with opera, and they are downright addictive to play without being too difficult. I found that once I worked out and mastered the fingerings, I was able to play the selections with relative ease and concentrate on the interpretation. One caveat: The arias are not necessarily written in their original keys, so you should not expect it. I think a couple of them could stand to be in a higher key in order to take advantage of the upper register of the instrument. To me this was a great find- some of my favorite music that I could play and enjoy. I would love to be able to find similar collections by other operatic composers.
