Composer's Notes:Pioneer Spirit March was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Springfield (CO) 6th grade band, Adam Steuart, Director. Being long time friends, Adam and I chat regularly about issues and successes we are having in our music careers. During one of our discussions the topic of 6th grade band music came up. Having had the experience of teaching 6th grade band myself, we agreed that most good composers tend to ignore writing for this age group. We could only assume that this is because of the inexperience of the performers and the challenge of writing quality music with all of the compositional limitations for young musicians. At that point, Adam proposed a commission of a new piece for this age group. Pioneer Spirit March was written over a couple of days in late December of 2008.Many thanks to Adam for his forward thinking and generous enthusiasm for new music.
