Pilgrimage by Floyd is a wonderful work for the Baritone voice. It is a work well performed by any senior level undergrad, or graduate student. It is also well expressed by the mature vocalist with time and talent; like many peices this cycle works for many levels of singers, and...

is well accepted by the public.

  • February 12, 2009 Not for just any singer!

This cycle is amazing, and amazingly difficult. It is written for two or three different types of baritone: "Man that is born", lyric baritone; "Save Me, O Lord", dramatic baritone; "O Lord, Thou Hast", lyric baritone with a good top; "Praise the Lord", Dramatic baritone; "For I am Persuaded", basso...

cantante or bass-baritone, but with a high A! Similar to the Brahms, "Vier Ernste Gesange", it builds dramatically toward the final movement - absolute exhaltation in "Praise the Lord" and calm understanding in "For I am Persuaded". These are incredibly rangy pieces and shouldn't be thought of as "church" music but dramatic music, well suited to the operatic stage. Floyd is a man of the theater - these songs must be approached that way. Anyone coming after these had damn well know what they're doing, technically. They are not for the faint of heart and the almost ready technique of a graduate student. But they are most satisfying to those who can manage them!
