Choral (SATB)
Composed by Joseph M. Martin. Harold Flammer. Choral. 20 pages. Shawnee Press #A7914. Published by Shawnee Press (HL.35016992).

Item Number: HL.35016992

This powerful new anthem is indescribably beautiful. The unusual title is taken from the famous masterpiece of artist Michelangelo. His sculpture shows Mary holding the slain Jesus in her arms. Three scenes from Mary's life carry us through a mother's sorrow and give us a moving portrait of grace. This is ideal for Christmas candlelight observances, Marian festivals, or during Holy week. Anytime our thoughts take us beyond the manger to the cross, “Pietà” will be an unforgettable moment.

This is one of our choir's favorite pieces of all time. The haunting melody gives way to a dark and dramatic chords and leaves one breathless and quite possibly in tears by the end of the piece.

My choir has done this piece several times and it is an extremely expressive piece of music. We added solo voices to the first and second verses - one female and one male - and this added such a personal feel, almost like Mary and Joseph were singing to the congregation. The...

first time we sang it there was not a dry eye in the church. We used it most recently for Palm Sunday and it was wonderful

This piece tells the story of Christ as his mother, Mary, would experience it- his birth, his growing up and his death. Extremely moving. I cannot sing it without shedding tears. Especially suitable for Good Friday.
