    San Juan Capistrano, CA
    Difficulty Level:
  • July 19, 2006 Fine edition with limitations

Advantages of this edition include an excellent 2-page preface by Frankenstein and reproductions of Hartmann's paintings (however, only in black and white; many of the originals in the exhibition haven't survived so similar works were reproduced instead). Disadvantages: almost useless fingerings by Philipp (most pieces, including the...

trickiest and the ones where an experienced performer's guidance would be most welcome, have no fingering at all). Most players will want to "orchestrate" (fill out) some of the movements, since Mussorgsky was no pianist, but there are no suggestions here.
