Piano Variations

Piano Variations composed by Aaron Copland (1900-1990). For Piano (Piano). BH Piano. 20th Century. SMP Level 10 (Advanced). Collection. Standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). 16 pages. Boosey & Hawkes #M051281794. Published by Boosey & Hawkes (HL.48002627).

With standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). 20th Century. 9x12 inches.

Copland's first major piece caused a stir from the time the composer gave the premiere performance at the artist's colony Yaddo, where he had started a festival of contemporary American music. He wrote that the Piano Variations "was the first work where i felt very sure of myself." Critic Paul Rosenfeld prophesied: "One felt its author the composer of coming decades." The work has continued to draw attention and has been described as strong, spare, and granitic. While Copland adapted the twelve tone method for the piece the tewenty variations and coda flow naturally in a style that is recognizably Copland's own.

  • September 30, 2007 So much from so little...

This was one of the very first 20th-C works I studied up close. What has always amazed me about these varaitions, is the very few "notes" on which they are based. Copland is a genius at maipulating rhythms, timbres, and especially register to create a continual kaleidoscope of new...

sound formation with the few jagged glass pieces he carves out in his percussive theme. Buy this one for study, and learn the theme, analyze how Copland transforms it into each variation, and get at least 3 of them into your fingers. I find them difficult, and can not play them all, but even to take a stab at these is a rewarding experience.

  • May 21, 2007 This really is beautiful music!...I swear...!

The Copland variations are a wonderful introduction to 20th century American music. It's a wonderful piece that really teaches the player to open your tonal mind to new types of harmony and dissonances. Copland uses very typical and traditional compositional devices to create something new and truly his. It...

's a far cry from most of his well-known music (Fanfare, Appalachian Spring...) but if you're into 20th century American music, this is a must.
