  • July 31, 2014 Some great features, and some problems

As far as I can tell, as of 2014, the two editions of Beethoven's Complete Piano Sonatas with the latest scholarship and most conscientious fidelity to Beethoven's text are this Vienna (Wiener) Urtext edition, edited by Peter Hauschild, and the ABRSM edition, edited by Barry Cooper. The former...

is less expensive, but after ordering a copy (while it was on sale) and looking it over, as well as looking over the ABRSM, I decided reluctantly to return the VU and buy the ABRSM (one volume at a time) at its full price. What I like about the VU edition: - High quality paper and binding - High standards of scholarship and editing - Very convenient page turns (better than ABRSM in this respect, at least in the sonatas where I compared them) What I don't like about it: - Awkward note spacing and layout in many instances (I think especially in the earlier sonatas) -- atypical for VU - Several minor typos I noticed (perhaps others I didn't) - Critical notes only for v.1 and only in German.
