About Bastien Piano Library

The Bastien Piano Library is an integrated course of study containing method books, related theory and technic books, and a wide variety of supplementary materials, including Music Flashcards, specifically correlated solo sight reading books, and note speller. The Bastien Piano Library also offers the option of beginning with either a "contemporary" approach (featuring pre-staff notation and first staff reading in G, then C, then middle C) or "traditional" approach (featuring Middle C reading and the C five-finger position).

The course features a gradual multikey approach, with keys grouped into four categories according to the pattern of white and black keys that occur in the tonic chord. One key group is studied at each level. The course begins in the key of G, followed by C and then middle...

    C. That approach avoids the student becoming fixed in one position. Beginning in G helps to develop intervalic reading without the confusion of leger lines. The only drawback to this course is that it doesn't give the student a system for decoding unknown notes. Notes have to be drilled in each hand position and then on the staff. A lot of folk songs are used as the basis for the course. More interestng material is in the Solo book. Note: Except for the core books, the Bastien supplements should be used AFTER completing the method. Thus, level 1 supplements should be used while studying level 2, etc. The pictures are less gaudy in this series.
