Piano Lessons - Book 1

Piano Lessons - Book 1 (Book/CD Pack). For Piano/Keyboard. Hal Leonard Student Piano Library. Learn To Play and Play Along. Book 1. Instructional book and accompaniment CD. Introductory text, instructional text, illustrations, easy piano notation, fingerings, musical examples and lyrics (on most songs). 64 pages. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.296177).

ISBN 063403118X. With introductory text, instructional text, illustrations, easy piano notation, fingerings, musical examples and lyrics (on most songs). Learn To Play and Play Along. 11.88x9 inches.

From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns. Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. This package includes a Piano Lessons Book and CD featuring wonderful tracks to accompany the student during practice or performance.

  • May 12, 2010 Great primer for 7-9 year olds.

This is one of my favorite primer books because it has: clever, jazzy tunes, clean and uncluttered pages, great accompaniments, a simple, logical presentation of concepts with kid- friendly illustrations. Yes, teachers will need to supplement with technique and enhance the new concepts presented, but the child gets an uncluttered...

page instead of crowded, confusing pages filled with lengthy explanations for the teacher/parent, as seen in other methods. The pieces really shine with the harmonically interesting accompaniments. Without them, the pieces could be perceived as less than. But an important part of music-making and skill building is playing in ensemble, is it not?

  • March 25, 2009 No Fun At All

I absolutely would not recommend this book for adults. And there are better books available for children. The slow progressive pace this book proceeds at is excellent, but the melodies sound terrible. I found it pure drudgery to work with. I did not use it with the accompaniment cd. Perhaps...

that would have helped. I began practicing a few weeks ago using my children's books. I found John Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers and Burnam's Dozen a Day Mini Book much better to work with. Of the adult books I have, I most prefer Palmer's Play Piano Now.

  • August 24, 2008 Very nice primer book

This book has some really beautiful pieces already in Chapter 1 the black key finger number pieces. Once the note reading is introduced the students need to figure out where to put their fingers for every piece, which I like. They all liked the 'Star Wars'-like music for Space...

Quest in Chapter 5. I had a 6 year old student with trouble with left and right and up and down, and for her the pieces in chapter 1 were confusing. I started her in Alfred's PrepCourse A for a foundation but will transfer her back into this book soon. The last 2 chapters need supplementing because there are only about 15 pieces on the grand staff.

  • July 21, 2008 good for beginners

needs more music fundamental exercises for students to drill with. I have all the books which correspond with this book and still feel more drill exercises would be helpful.

  • March 16, 2007 Solid method book

I have used many method books for my students. This series works quite well. The CD is fun for the students and the improvisation sections are great. Improvisation is often overlooked in many method books!
