This arrangement of Grainger for brass quintet is wonderful. These arrangements are absolutely gorgeous, though they are incredibly challenging at times.

  • February 19, 2009 A disappointment

When I finally got round to trying this eagerly anticipated suite out with my amateur brass quintet we were thrown at the first hurdle with literally impossible (not just difficult) mute changes in the first movement. We found the arrangements were not written kindly for brass instruments, 2nd trumpet having...

more of a lead range and the parts being generally taxing. No doubt a top quality pro brass quintet (or something approaching) could make it sound better (as they could almost anything) but we were disappointed.

Wind Band fans might recognize the first movement of this collection from Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy for Wind Ensemble. The other movements are some of Grainger's more obscure music, but very playable. A little redundant, but workable for a concert setting.
