I originally reviewed this and only gave it two stars because American Tune wasn't the version that I knew from the original record. But when I play it with the record, it gets you 3/4 of the way there, so it's really not that big of an...

issue. Also I've learned a few of the other tunes as well and they are all very well done (Bookends, Kathy's Song, etc.). So I thought I should give it more stars than I did last time (I'll give it 5 this time to balance out the 2). Also, for you guitar players: the original recordings of tunes like American Tune and Kathy's Song don't match a standard guitar tuning (they probably played with the song speed when they recorded it - that always causes this problem). So if you have software (I use something called "Transcribe") you can fix this. Just load the song up and then adjust its tuning so that you can play along with it. For American Tune I subtract 20 cents. For Kathy's Song I add 60. Hope that helps!

  • 2013-04-16 00:00:00.0 American Tune not the version I know

I just got this book and I was really looking forward to it just so I could learn American Tune, which is a song I've loved for 40 years. But the version I know is from the original record it was released on. It turns out that Hanson transcribed...

a version from a "Greatest Hits" record that isn't even in print any more. Seems like it's close, but it's definitely not the same as the original. And since that is the whole reason I bought this book, I'm not too happy. But I gave it 2 stars since I'm sure it's still a well done book.

I vacillated a bit before getting this title as it looked a bit thin in terms of the number of Paul Simon songs covered that I was especially interested in. However, I am glad I took the plunge as it is the best source of accurate Paul Simon transcriptions I...

have discovered, and that is after much searching on the web. In addition, the accompanying notes add considerably to its value, and the book is also very well printed both for the tab and the stave.

A very good book indeed, with trascriptions that clear and faithful to the record, with a good background to how to play each of the songs and also good explanations of the techniques required of each song - I would recommend buying any book from the author of this work.

If you want authentic transcriptions, this is the book for you. I have every Paul Simon guitar book of note, and this is the only one with real recorded-version tabs; lamentably, it lacks some of Simon's wonderful flourishes, but it is by far the best Paul Simon guitar...

guitar book available. Each song includes a page of performance instructions/notes that are genuinely helpful and informative. The music ranges from early intermediate ("Bookends") to intermediate advanced--the more difficult arrangements (like "Hearts and Bones," "The Late Great Johnny Ace," etc., are much too demanding for a real beginner. But if you have decent fingerpicking abilities and want a book to grow with, this would be a great choice. A true 5-star selection. If it had included "April Come She Will," I would be a happy man.
