The work begins with the traditional Gregorian chant (mm. 1 - 5) followed by an introduction passage (mm. 6-11). In the following sections the words "Pater Noster" appear constantly between the voices while the other voices sing the other parts of the text. Tenors and Basses sing a pedal passage with the words "Pater Noster" while Sopranos and Altos sing the main lines. Bars 54-58 are marked as "pesante, marcato and dark", the music can be slower in order to emphasize the effect while leading to the fortissimo "sed libera nos a Malo" and the beautiful "Amen" at the end.
