  • September 20, 2007 Oscar made easy???

I was hesitant about ordering some of Oscar's music in view of his prodigious talent, but he stuck to the basic melody (without embellishments) and a bonus was a lead sheet for each item. Also he included some descriptive notes to help you along.

  • February 20, 2007 Oscar is the Man!!!

Obviously, the man has the best chops ever. Known for his incredible talent and his great ability to improvise and make classic songs his own, I became a fan only lately. In this songbook, you have got to play Love Ballade. . . Great, great melody!

  • December 18, 2005 Main Themes Only - No Improvisations

This item consists of 5 Oscar Peterson compositions (main themes only) with accompanying advice from the composer about phrasing, style, etc. After studying this material, my admiration for Peterson as composer increased. But don't be misled. The transcriptions are only of the main themes. No improvised material is included...

. In the preface, Peterson seems to suggest that this is Vol.1A and that a separate Vol.1B contains "an expanded improvisational rendition of each tune..." However, when I contacted the publisher (Hal Leonard) about this, I was told there is no separate Vol.1B, nor is one planned. According to HL, Vol.1B refers to the lead sheets, which in light of Peterson's remarks in the preface, is absurd. That said, Peterson buffs and accomplished jazz pianists may be satisfied with this item. Nevertheless, I think it is misleading to describe it as "authentic note-for-note transcriptions" as the advertising blurb on the web does.
