  • September 18, 2007 A discerning critique

First, this is a lovely song; evocative and meaningful. It is a lyrically and musically tasteful precis (summary) of the salient events surrounding the birth of Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah - the "Light" of and to the world. This imagery is well handled, initially, by the title of the song...

and continuously by the caringly positioned lyrics; eg. "Long, long ago; in a world dark and cold ..... ONE BRIGHT STAR was shining...". The significance of the "Light" is brought out again in "They saw the light in the darkness..." and then beautifully personalised in "...I saw the Light in the darkness" ... concluding with the prayerful wish, "May it shine its light on you, this Christmas night". I have been a fan of this song since Christmas 1987 and wrote my own accompaniment to it for use in church circles. While it is a good thing and useful to have a choral setting, I am disappointed with this writing. I believe it could have been 'fuller' and more interesting.

A few years ago, I sang this song in high school for our Christmas Concert. This is one of the best songs I've ever sang.
