Great piece. Played in AZ All-State Band in 2006. Great section parts, very influential. Key signatures easy for some, hard for otheres.

  • October 19, 2008 Beauty Beyond Words

It is hard to describe in words the beauty of Eric Whitacre's "October". I sight-read this piece in my high school's wind ensemble and some people needed tissues. One just has to listen to it. Eric Whitacre is also one of my favorite composers. The oboe solo...

and the flute parts are just gorgeous. The piece also has a very honest and pure quality to it. The parts themselves are not overwhelmingly challenging, but it takes a lot of work in order to play it emotionally and get the chords just right. The flutes must also not use vibrato. "October" is amazing and with patience and dedication, your ensemble will feel highly accomplished when it's ready.

  • February 12, 2008 A Wonderful Piece

I'm a sophomore in high school, but I was lucky enough to get selected to play the solo on this song. The key signature ranges far, and can be difficult in the begining section. Overall, however, I would tell any band that wanted to play this to give it...

a shot. Definitely my favorite that I've ever played.
