Joseph Robinson of The Double Reed says of Elaine Douvas in this recording: "Eschewing overt expression in favor of implication and subtlety, she offers performances that are stylish and full of passion and conviction to be sure, but which, like all great art, withstand and reward the most careful scrutiny. Expert phrasing and articulation by Elaine Douvas in this album demonstrate persuasively that the pieces she has chosen are sufficient to challenge the finest player's imagination, discipline and instrumental skill." This album is a delight for any oboist and again contains a rich collection of music from many periods, from Telemann to Hindemith. Includes sheet music printed on high-quality ivory paper, annotated with performance suggestions and a compact disc with complete versions (with soloist) followed by piano accompaniments to each piece, minus the soloist. Soloist: Elaine Douvas, oboe. Ensemble: Erik Nielsen, piano.

  • February 09, 2009 Challenge to my abilities

I am 60, just retired, and started up with the oboe again. I took a few lessons and then got this and found that 'I could do this'. It was a challenge and a pleasure to find that I was able to play this with practice.

  • February 05, 2008 lucky with this album

I like the choice of the pieces. There is sufficient difference. Unfortunately I miss two parts in the Correlli-Barbirolli Concerto, because I have also another edition of the Concerto existing of five parts. But I don't know which is the original.

  • August 22, 2007 Great oboist, great teacher

I have been playing oboe for over 50 years and have taken lots of oboe lessons and have played under numerous conductors. I loved OBOE CLASSICS FOR THE INTERMEDIATE PLAYER. The playing of Elaine Douvas on the album is outstanding as are her written guidelines for each piece. The piano...

accompaniment is solid. An oboist at any level of advancement will benefilt from this album.

  • February 12, 2007 Great Collection for adv. HS players

Apparently Reshma & Anon believe they know more about teaching the oboe than a major American player and a educational music publisher that has been in business over 30 years. The value of this collection is the contrast of Baroque and 20th century styles. All of the pieces are originally written...

for oboe--that sets this collection apart from many other compilations. The performances by Ms Douvas are worth the price alone. These pieces are appropriate recital pieces for late High School/early college. They are not "way too easy" or beginner-level pieces. This collection will increase your musical maturity.

  • January 03, 2007 It's not just about notes on the page...

I've been playing for 8 years, and what makes this edition so great, wonderful, and challenging, is making MUSIC from it. It's not just about how fast you can move your fingers on your instrument. Some of the most captivating pieces are largo and larghetto. Not, presto with...

sixteenth notes. Yes, the page isn't as "black" as some people like to think when it comes to rating difficulty in music...but being musical while playing it is the big challenege. I love this collection and I love making music with it.
