O sacrum Convivium composed by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594). Edited by Ralph W. Buxton. For SATTB choir a cappella. Liturgical Use: Communion; Feasts of the Blessed Sacrament. Text: Latin. Choral. Vocal score. Text Language: Latin. Duration ca. 4 minutes. Published by Notre Dame Choir Editions (PE.NDC006).

With Text Language: Latin. Choral.

Palestrina's setting of this hymn to the Blessed Sacrament possesses an otherworldly serenity coupled with a sensuousness not too dissimilar in effect, though achieved with very different means, from French composer Messiaen's celebrated setting of this same hymn from the early 20th century. The change from the flowing counterpoint of the opening pages to slower, more sustained music at the words "passionis ejus" is particularly striking.
