Hidden within all of the 10 innovative piano solos in each volume are scales---sometimes ascending, sometimes descending---in one or both hands. What makes each book "Not Just Another Scale Book," however, is the accompanying CD that features wonderfully orchestrated background tracks. Book 1 features pieces written in both major and minor keys up to two sharps or flats. Book 2 has pieces written in major and minor keys using three to seven sharps. The pieces in Book 3 are written in major and minor keys using three to seven flats.

  • August 14, 2007 WOW! Great book!!

I've used this book with several students. Its a great book to use with students learning scales. Not only does it teach the kids the proper scale fingerings, but it also shows practical use of the scales within actual pieces. These pieces sound fantastic and there seems to something...

for every type of student. I will use this book again.

It's innovative and it's skillfully done. This book and it's accompanying CD are designed as adjuncts for teaching scales and how they are used in pieces. The book presents a scale and then gives preparatory technical snippets for playing its illustrative piece. Some of the pieces are...

jazzy and will appeal on that basis, others are lyrical or mood pictures - each cleverly uses the scales so interestingly that a student might not even realize they're practicing scales! The real zinger, however, is the CD which gives the pieces orchestral accompaniment in performance and practice tempos with and without the solo part. Mike Springer deserves a round of applause.
