  • February 12, 2010 Good Alternative to Michael Aaron

The Mark Nevin Piano Course bears a strong resemblance to the Michael Aaron course. It progresses just slightly slower than the Aaron, but the approach is quite similar. Boys especially take to the format of the book: white pages, simple, clear, black and white photos, and music that is fun...

and rewarding to play. A lot of the pieces feature broken chords in arpeggio fashion. The course is designed to be used by itself, so there is plenty of theory and technic right in the course itself. I like to use the course as a supplement to other piano courses, where additional performing music is a primary objective. I used this course as a supplement when teaching my daughter; she liked it quite a bit. Not all of the original series is still in print, but the prep level, and books (grades) 1 and 2 are worth having around. I hope they keep these in print.

This is a solid, straightforward series that works well especially for those who are keen to practise and progress quickly. Some theory is included in the book.
