Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was a son of Johann Sebastian and served at the court of Buckeburg. In 1787-8 he published a four-volume collection of his keyboard and other music under the title Musical Leisure Hours from which the 69 short pieces in this album have been selected. Miniatures intended for light entertainment these are mostly pieces in the popular dance forms of the day while a few look back to the style of his father.

  • February 06, 2013 The title says it all--delightful!

I got this recently and have sightread through several selections so far. The dance forms and style are mostly light and charming, and the difficulty level seems appropriately marked. If you can play the Anna M. and W.F. Bach notebook pieces and little Preludes, you can enjoy these. This...

book reminds me of the Alfred "Dances of J.S. Bach", but somewhat easier. Fingering and editing are spare, nothing like most Alfred editions for intermediates, and I will have to go through and mark a lot of fingering for myself, but I have to finger thoroughly with Bach. The editor does flesh out some of the trills, but assumes you can figure out how to do a simple trill or mordent. The print is easily readable, which matters to my aging eyes, and the notes are not too dense on the page. I probably won't be able to take these up to the suggested tempos for the faster dances, but I expect to enjoy playing them. This is part of an excellent ABRSM series of "Easier Piano Pieces". Highly recommended.
