I think this is a great reading text for guitar students. Most professionals read in fifth position and that's where this book starts. Very logical. And the use of classical themes for exercises is nice.

  • August 20, 2007 Great for filling in Student's fretboard knowledge

This is not a fretboard pattern book! Fretboard patterns are great, and are very important for developing speed, fluidity, and understanding of a guitar fretboard. But they tend to be a crutch that guitarists use to avoid learning where ALL the actual NOTES on the fretboard lie. After all, what...

if you are improvising and you want to play a #9 note over top of that dominant 7 chord the band is playing? Do you know where the all the A-flats are in the 7th position of the neck? No? What if you are playing around that part of the neck and want an Ab? This book goes where all those pattern-oriented fretboard knowledge books won't go - into reading notes all over the neck! It takes a simple, step-by-step approach to reading in different neck regions and reading ever-increasingly-syncopated rhythms. It is a fantastic book to use once a beginner has acquired basic reading skills in the key of C (and perhaps G and D) in the home position.
