Music in Me - Lesson Level 1: Reading Music (Music in Me - A Piano Method for Young Christian Students). For Piano. Sacred Folio. Early Elementary. 32 pages. Word Music #080689396380. Published by Word Music (HL.309914).

ISBN 142341876X. 9x12 inches.

There is music inside all of us, especially children! That's how God created them, and so making music comes naturally to them. Teaching children to make their own music on a keyboard (and to find joy in it) is what Music in Me is all about. Each book in this unique series is designed to help them understand both musical and Biblical concepts at the same time. Early exposure to music theory – especially harmony and ear training – plus an understanding of how music “works” will provide today's children with a strong foundation for becoming tomorrow's church musicians.

Music in Me includes five levels, and each level includes five coordinating student books: Lesson (Reading Music); Theory & Technique (Understanding Music); Creativity (Writing Your Own Music); Praise & Worship (Solos to Play); and Hymns & Holidays (Solos to Play).

    Keyser, WV
    Difficulty Level:
  • August 31, 2011 Not working for young beginner

This series may be okay for older beginners, but for one of my seven year old students, it's just moving too fast. Her hand is too small to comfortably be playing sixths already (after just 2 or 3 months of lessons). And both hands together came too soon for...

her. Also, I'm finding that students are playing too much by ear and not really reading the notes or their values, since they know most of the songs presented. I'm switching these students back to Alfred's, which introduces smaller intervals first, moves more slowly and provides more songs for reinforcement of concepts. However, I would still recommend the Hymns book and especially the Praise & Worship books. I will still use these as supplementary materials.

    Difficulty Level:
  • July 19, 2011 Giving it a try

This is the first time I've used this piano method with my students. The parents are excited about the Christian material. I haven't been able to find many reviews from other teachers, so I was a little bit hesitant to try it. But, so far, I think I...

like it. I have always used the Alfred's series, and I think that was easier to teach from. However, my students are learning easily and they enjoy being able to already play songs they know. Also, I think this method will definitely encourage more creativity and writing on the part of the student, which I think is a wonderful feature. One disadvantage is that the solo books, Hymns and Praise/Worship, are not perfectly sequenced or correlated to the lesson book. So, it is up to the teacher, to determine when a student is ready for each of these songs. This is a minor issue though.
