  • February 04, 2012 Best "Messiah" edition

This copy replaces my old Novello Messiah, which seems to have gotten lost. The Novello is my favorite edition. It provides an appendix containing variations, transpositions, etc., of some of the arias which were also written by Handel because, like many professional conductors, he hired pick-up musicians and often...

never knew from one performance to the next exactly who would show up. The larger size of the pages makes it even more useful and accessible. It's good to have it back! (Shuffles off to work on the ALTO variation of "But Who May Abide the Day of His Coming" and the 12/8 version of "Rejoice Greatly"....)

This relatively new re-setting of the classic Watkins Shaw edition of Messiah is larger (7.5 x 11 inches)and cleaner than its predecessor, and is printed on a brighter paper stock. All of these features will be especially appreciated by the eyes of choristers who have passed, say 40...

or 45! It may be the difference between singing with your spectacles and singing without. Pagination is the same as the older print, so it can be used interchangeably with aged copies (give them to the youngsters!)
