  • November 03, 2008 Playing Around MOZART

I played MOZART's sonatas when I was 12 years old. And could still recall how my piano teacher taught me the right dynamics and tempo as she prepared me for my "premiere recital" and piano exams. When my CHORUS started learning it, what came to my mind FIRST was...

"how I learned it when I was just a kid". I did exactly what my piano teacher taught me. Except for some parts that we treated the music as something we can "play around". So I coached the Chorus to sing the 1st part in a an "operatic traditional way", putting emphasis on "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart". And as we do the "development part" or building up, I incorporated the distinct contrast between FF and PP which was very evident. This music is very light, very classical and fun to sing. What made it more fun was the idea that "we really played around the music". And ended it with a big BANG!

This is a delightful change of pace during the holiday performance season. Everyone is familiar with these Mozart tunes and the popular Christmas lyrics fit perfectly with the melodies. It's fun to sing and, best of all, engaging for the audience.
