The world's premier method for learning modern plectrum style guitar, time-tested and proven successful in building the theoretic and technical foundation needed to play in any style. All seven grades of this method are written in standard notation only to encourage better sight reading. In Grade 1, the student guitarist will learn to play solos, duets, scales, and chords in the keys of C, A minor, G and E minor. Even in Grade 1, the student is already exposed to the chord/melody concept of guitar performance.

A supplementary study book entitled Grade 1 Studies, two different play-along CD recordings (pop and traditional), and a VHS or DVD video are also available for purchase separately. The companion recordings feature Tommy Flint and William Bay playing in split-track format, with the solo parts performed on the right channel, and the accompaniment or second duet parts played on the left. The student can play along with the full recording, or tune out either channel and play the missing part.

I first started using this book way back in 1968 when I opened my first guitar teaching school. Going back to it this year has re-enforced the excellent theoretical and practical learning content of the book for beginners of all ages. The exercises on each page are perfectly graded...

in increments of difficulty according to the progression of the student. Sheetmusicplus service was excellent too.

  • February 10, 2011 Far from the best method, but usable

I've used this book for years, sparingly. Until I get off my butt and write something better I'm stuck with this. The book starts out fine, but why they decide to teach reading from the highest notes in open position to the lowest is beyond me. Whatever. I...

find only about 16 or so pages to be useful wherein I abandon this method for a combination of my own material and clarinet books which I use for reading studies and sight reading practice. Also, melodic rhythms from Berklee, another great book--and not at all too advanced for beginning rhythm reading practice.

Bought this product to prepare for creating a gospel group in our church. I'm still trying to find the time to reach this goal but I know I can't have a better teacher than Mel Bay!

  • November 09, 2007 This is a solid beginning book

This is a great book! It first teaches you how to read music, then gives you simple whole note studies. It then quickly progresses to playing eighth notes, and gives you the major and minor chords in the keys of C and G. When I first starting learning the guitar...

, I found it to be a good, although by no means easy, guitar curriculum. Mel Bay's Modern Guitar method is very good.
