In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning...[and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style. Includes a double CD featuring solo fiddle. The teaching recording plays the first tunes slowly, but by the end, are played at the correct speed. This stereo recording contains 77 of the 80 songs from the book.

Worth paying for the cd and book. Very helpful for beginners-I use it with the traditional irish fiddle with cd also.

I have really been enjoying working my way through this book. Honestly I hadn't played my violin for almost 20 years and my sight reading is not very good. For me the CD made all the difference, I have been able to listen to the music, there are notes...

on technique, and the songs are really fun to master and sound great.

This did not come with 2 cds, and when I inquired as to whether it did I was told that it did not. I ordered this because I thought it would be complete and had heard the good reviews. I will be returning it and ordering the complete series directly...

    from Mel Bay.

This is really a comprehensive book to learn, they show you the style and sample how to do it before some of the songs. So I can isolate the main difficulty of the song. That is good clarification especially if you are doing a self study. Thanks.

  • February 14, 2008 A stylistic concentration on Celtic Fiddle

If you wish to take your current fiddling skills to the next level by concentrating on the Celtic style, this is the book for you. MAKE SURE TO GET THE VERSION WITH THE CDs INCLUDED! Without them, the book is marginally useful, but complemented by the CDs, this book is...

    pure gold!
