I think Jay Umble's book is phenomenal. ÊIt is one of the most in depth treatments on the subject of guitar improvisation I have seen. ÊIn it there are so many places to stop and explore; I know I will be enjoying it for a long time. ÊThanks for this contribution to the resources of guitar literature and for revealing so much that until now has remained largely unexplained.

"Payin' Your Dues With The Blues" sheds some serious light on the endless possibilities that exist within these two worlds (jazz and blues). ÊIt has become my reference book and I highly recommend it to all of my students. ÊIt contains hundreds of great examples. ÊThanks for a great book on my favorite form(s) of music.

Jay Umble's approach to theory is exactly as direct as it should be. He wastes no time piddling around, getting cold wet feet in the swimming pool of music theory. Instead, he dives in head-first and invites his reader to do the same. Therefore this book is not...

for the casual guitarist who wants instant gratification reading through six beginner level books in a week. Rather, this book will lead an adventurous musician along an epic quest, covering the full scope of jazz and blues guitar. It might be a daunting journey, time-consuming and filled with obstacles and self-discovery, but that is the nature of music, and Jay Umble lets it be so.
