Although designed for a shorter course, great care has been taken to provide the students with a solid foundation in technique and the fundamentals of playing guitar. Contents include: holding position, chords, strum patterns, tuning, reading single note solos in tablature and standard notation, and ensembles all in a variety of music styles. The book also contains a section on playing the blues and writing original blues lyrics. Fifty five lesson plans are available on line at melbay.com and quizzes will also be made available. I've been using this book for several years in a beginners' guitar class that I teach at the local Community College. My class is designed with the assumption that my students have had no prior exposure to formal music instruction, and no experience on guitar. I structure all of...

my lessons on this premise, and I strive to give my students a broad and shallow (rather than a narrow, deep) exposure to various styles of play, as well as some music theory and history as applicable. Though no single book or method can perfectly fill this requirement, for an 8 to 10 week class situation, this book works very well for me.
