  • February 14, 2013 Nifty, pedagogical

I found this little anthology rather nifty. It belongs to that genre of pedagogical, introductory samplers; such editions exist for just about all instruments— except, curiously, mandolin. As the editor writes, the criterion of selection was to cherry-pick from various works of Bach those movements "that lend themselves best...

to performance on solo mandolin". Carefully chosen on that basis, and expertly edited with clever fingerings and auxiliary notations, it serves its purpose quite well. In later stages of their development, yes, mandolinists may (and should) study Bach's violin works comprehensively.

  • August 22, 2011 Mando Bach - Almost useless

I don't really understand the advantages of this piece arranged for the mandolin. To my taste, the selection is pieces is poor, and, to the extent that I played,m there no advantage of this compared to the original score written for violin solo
