  • August 12, 2008 Try again, Leon Block!

The arrangement was too "sparse" in places where it could have had more detail --- for example, some open-A bass in the early measures would have helped make it sound fuller. The arpeggio at the bottom of the 1st page should have been fuller. There's more, but that'll...

    have to do.

  • July 15, 2008 poorly transcribed

This is a very hasty reduction of Lecuona's Malaguena from keyboard to fingerboard. There are plenty of places where Leon Block could have added open-string bass notes (for example in the opening 8 measures) to make it sound "fuller". The Arpeggio notations? Well, --- those should have been spelled...

out in more detail, preferably with eighth notes. Intermediate students could handle them. The penultimate line on page 4 is awkward. With less haste, he could have made this line playable.

  • July 02, 2007 A Clean Transcription

I had reviewed several transcriptions of Lecuona's "Malaguena" and accidentally ordered the wrong one from Hal Leonard that includes a TAB score and is primarily a strum pattern. This transcription is by far the best for classical guitar--the transcription is clean and neat. Do not, however, be mislead...

by its simplicity since it never goes beyond the 2nd Position. This piece is a challenge because it requires the player to interpret several key measures on his or her own--the tempo changes periodically and several measures are played freely allowing the player to shape the emotion of the piece. A beginner might be able to play it, but a beginner would not have the skill to craft the right emotion. It is for this reason that I selected this transcription and it will remain a permanent part of my repetoire.

  • December 19, 2006 A Malaguena for everyone

Before I've had a chance to examine the Hal Leonard 6374 Malaguena arranged by Vincente Gomez, I have tried this one arranged by Leon Black. It's 6 pages including the front and back (nothing on these two) so it's really 4 pages of sheet music. Approximately 100...

bars including the phrases that are repeated. It's a great arrangement, and I highly recommend it to anyone. One note however: this does not include tab. It is only standard notation.
