Composed by Irish Traditional. Arranged by Dorothy van Joolen Barth. Holiday,Multicultural,Standards,Wedding,World. Score and parts. 58 pages. Dorothy van Joolen Barth #6241. Published by Dorothy van Joolen Barth (A0.784993).

Maidens of Melody contains 35 traditional tunes (for a total of 31 duos, since four of the duos combine two tunes into a medley). The source tunes were selected from O’Neill’s Music of Ireland and arranged by Dorothy van Joolen Barth for two instruments. The tunes are arranged in five thematically related "chapters": (1) Maidens of Melody, (2) Mainly Mary, (3) Treasured Tresses, (4) Mostly Molly, and (5) Lastly Lasses. This download is for the entire anthology, with title page, table of contents, and preface included (57 pages total). For musicians who would prefer to download a single section rather than the complete anthology, five separate sectional downloads are also available according to the section titles listed above. As an audio sample, the medley Sweet Molly Malone/Molly My Dear is provided here. The individual section downloads contain some additional audio samples if you wish to hear more. These arrangements can be played on recorder and violin (which is how we play them), flute and violin, or two violins. If the upper part is played on recorder, the recorder player may switch between soprano, alto, and tenor recorders in accordance with the range and mood of each piece. We generally prefer the soprano recorder on the faster reels, jigs, and hornpipes and the tenor recorder (or sometimes the alto recorder) on the more lyrical pieces. In performing this music, I often create new embellishments, in keeping with Celtic tradition where no two performances of a piece are ever identical. You will likewise add your own meaning to this evocative music. Violinists can add authenticity by applying Irish bowing techniques, which includes various slurring patterns. Such bowings have been kept to a minimum in this collection for recorder and violin, but the techniques are well worth exploring and developing. These pieces are delightful perform for Celtic festivals, St. Patrick's Day celebrations, weddings, birthdays, and theme events. Above all, may this music provide both player and listener with much enjoyment--and not only if your name is Mary or Molly! UPDATE July 2015: We've just completed a digital recording of Maidens of Melody under our Kammeraderie label; please search and sample it if you are interested in hearing a performance of this music.
