Composed by Gustav Mahler. Arranged by John Gibson. Romantic Period. 19 pages. JB Linear #2031023. Published by JB Linear (A0.581683).

Gustav Mahler's In Search of Higher Understanding (1896) - A singing contest between a cuckoo and a nightingale, judged by a donkey. This was a light work by Mahler for baritone and orchestra that describes a contest of singing by a cuckoo and a nightingale which was judged (rather unfairly it seems) by a donkey. It is said that Mahler wrote this as a reaction to music critics. The piece is arranged for woodwind quintet by John Gibson (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, horn in F, bassoon). The French Horn has the melody throughout. This piece is also part of a larger group of pieces called It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, also available at Sheet Music Plus. You can watch a You Tube video of the score at https://youtu.be/6KX71qFEBs8.
