  • December 13, 2011 Magnificat Vocal Score

I wanted to arrange two movements from the piano/vocal score for solo harp and was delighted to purchase this arrangement at such a reasonable price in the US. I had located it in the UK last year but it was sold out. Sheet Music Plus sent it very quickly...

and I was thrilled with their service.

  • February 18, 2009 Rutter's Magnificat

This is a most profound piece of music --- learning the soprano part is a prayerful experience as well as listening to it. The soprano solo resonates so beautifully throughout the piece. Rutter's ability to balance the voice parts really bring out the power of this story of a young...

woman's promise to God and all that goes with that. The Magnificat is a powerful prayer --- and Rutter captures it's power so beautifully with what seems like a conversation. Most Rutter arrangements are really great to teach a choir as their are nuances that can be a challenge to teach but once pulled together really sound so great.

  • October 17, 2008 WOW! What A Piece!

Magnificat is one of my favorite choral pieces. We in the Chancel Choir at my church (Oak Hill United Methodist Church, Austin, TX; me: Bass II) has performed it twice in the past (first time 1996 as I recall), and are readying another performance for Dec. 2008. All of the...

reviews that I have seen mention the 6th and 7th movements, which are both beautiful and exciting, as Rutter does better than almost anyone. I particularly like the 2nd movement, which is a Tudor (15th-century) poem. The rest of the piece is in Latin, and the moving parts are really stunning. I know of two CD versions by the Cambridge Singers - Be sure to listen to either one with the orchestral accompaniment. The orchestra carries the mood in the piece, but it is the choral voices that give the excitement to the music (as it should be.)

  • April 07, 2008 John Rutter at his Best

Rutter's Magnificat is indeed magnificent. Our University Chorus here in Chico, CA performed it last week and I know we performers enjoyed it at least as much as our audience. A 15-year veteran of the chorus said it was the most rewarding choral piece in which he'd...

    been involved. Amen to that!
