Magma, ‘sparks of sound’ for violin, viola and cello, was written in 2014 to a commission from the Swiss Chamber Concerts for Esther Hoppe, Jurg Dahler and Thomas Grossenbacher, to whom the work is also dedicated. These same musicians gave the world premiere of the work on 7 May 2014 in Geneva.
"Magma does not develop out of silence, as is otherwise often the case in a large number of my works, but steamrollers the audience, full of energy. Out of its predominantly noise-like sounds there flare up small sparks time and again, which develop into a long farewell. The palette of tone colours is especially broad in this work, ranging from barely perceptible noises via micro-intervals to sheer euphony." - David Philip Hefti
