Lux Aurumque (Light of Gold)

Lux Aurumque (Light of Gold) composed by Eric Whitacre (1970-). For Concert Band (Score & Parts). Eric Whitacre Concert Band. Grade 4. Published by BCM International (HL.4002371).

Commissioned by the Texas Music Educators Association for their 2005 All-State Band, Lux Aurumque is an extraordinarily lush and poignant adaptation of one of Eric Whitacre's most popular choral works. Gorgeous, simple triads melt from one beautiful chord to the next, creating a slowly evolving wash of colors and light. Elegantly orchestrated by the composer, Lux Aurumque is a profoundly moving experience for players and audiences alike. (Grade 4) (5:30).

I first heard this piece in an all-district ensemble and I was blown away. Simply Incredible music! I was a little disappointed though to hear that Mr. Whitacre chose not to employ any percussion parts. But still, a wonderful arrangement.

    Difficulty Level:
  • February 04, 2007 ASTOUNDING!

Very few pieces can convey such emotion as Lux Autumque can. I believe that the edited middle section improves on the overall effect of the piece (for band), giving it somewhat of its own identity seperate from the choral piece. In many sections when played correctly, the orchestration can achieve...

a sound that resembles a large church organ, intensifying the impact. Bravo!
