Elderkin, "Jesus, the Light of the World." For SATB choir, piano and medium voice soloist, it was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery, Alabama Civil Rights March led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Kr. in 1965. It features new lyrics by Wayland Rogers which reflect that and other marches which are done in solidarity for the cause of justice. The refrain, "Walk in the light, beautiful light. Come where the dew-drops of mercy shine bright. Shine all around us by day and by night. Love is the light of the world," substitutes the word Love in place of Jesus as it is in Elderkin's text. By this means the text does not reference any particular religion and may be sung with impunity in secular as well as religious environments. Elderkin used the lyrics of "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" by Charles Wesley for the verses.
